You know what we could all use these days? More Maria Sofia Astrology! As one of our most prolific writers, the New York City-based astrologer offers an authentic, engaging voice to discuss things like Love, Sex and Mars, Your Guide to Astro Compatibility, and Top 3 Ways to Look for Love Based on Your Birth Chart.
We got a chance to catch up with Maria Sofia to ask her our burning questions and learn more about how she found her way into the world of astrology, what she does to perfect her craft, and her dream celebrity astrological reading.
Hey Hero: We’re going to ask you to go back in time. The first time you heard the word Astrology was…
Maria Sofia: As a kid. I was totally into sun sign astrology and reading about astro compatibility!
HH: When did you first know you wanted to make Astrology a career? Was there a moment when things just clicked for you?
MS: I started on Instagram, just hoping to explain astrology to people in the way I learned it and I realized how much I loved writing about it and sharing it with others in order to help them make sense of their own lives.
HH: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received along the way?
MS: If you wait until you know everything to put yourself out there, you'll never get out there. Your followers will grow as you do. And new followers will meet you where you are. So don't worry about being perfect. That was advice from two of my astro mentors who knew that I'm a Virgo Rising and I can be super hard on myself!
HH: What’s your advice to someone trying to make a name for themselves in the world of Astrology?
MS: Be yourself. Bring your unique voice and point of view. There are basic technical aspects and techniques to astrology that every astrologer should learn -- the basic point of entry. But only you can bring your intuition and interpretations. So even if it feels like everyone is talking about the same transits and you can't stand out, you will if you are being authentic, original and yourself.
HH: We really connected to your passion and authenticity as an online Creator and astrology writer. But we'd love to hear from you, in your own words, how you'd describe your overall philosophy when it comes to Astrology.
MS: We always can choose how we respond to what we can't control. The more I know about astrology, the more convinced I am how much free will we have as humans. Astrology isn't here to hand us our fates and drop the mic. It's here to guide us towards acting in our highest capacity, with integrity, and with authority, even if the circumstances aren't ideal. Actually, especially if they're not.
HH: How do you continue to hone your craft or just find creative inspiration? Are there certain Astrology writers, magazines, podcasts, or something else that you always go back to or always keep up with?
MS: Taking astrology classes with mentors whose work I respect and admire is key to honing my craft, as not only do I learn about a subject I love, but I connect with fellow students and colleagues who I can speak in shorthand with in a way only astrologers can with each other. My favorite living astrologer and I think the person whose work is most impactful and speaks to my soul is Steven Forrest.
HH: If you could perform an Astrology reading on anyone, alive or dead, real or fictional, who would it be?
MS: The cast of Buffy the Vampire the Slayer. The characters and the cast.
HH: What’s the biggest misconception out there about Astrology?
MS: That it's confirmation bias and people only hear what they want to hear.
HH: And of course, we have to ask, what do you enjoy most about answering questions on Hey Hero?
MS: Helping people get clarity on themselves or a situation they're facing is very gratifying.
